The Grace of Wonder

And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.” Luke 5:26

We Gather Together Musical Prelude Announcements Centering Song: Spirit, Open My Heart, MV 79 Refrain: Spirit, open my heart to the joy and pain of living. As you love may I love, in receiving and in giving, Spirit, open my heart. Write your love upon my heart as my law, my goal, my story. In each thought, word, and deed, may my living bring you glory. Refrain Call to Worship: One: We gather today in the hope that each of us will hear something that can mean a new beginning. All: A new hope, a new attitude, a new passion. One: We listen with faithful expectation that words will feed us in the ways we need. All: Need for comfort, need for strength, need for purpose. One: In our togetherness we manifest conviction that this life is about relationship. All: Relationship with each other, relationship with God. One: Escaping cynicism to embrace wonder and awe, All: We open our eyes and hearts. Amen. Lighting of the Christ Candle Acknowledgment and Commitment Opening Hymn: How Great Thou Art, VU 238 O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the works thy hand hath made, I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder, thy power throughout the universe displayed. Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, How great thou art! How great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee, How great thou art! How great thou art! When through the woods and forest glades I wander, I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze. Refrain When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration and there proclaim, ‘‘My God, how great thou art!” Refrain Opening Prayer: One: Creator God, we contemplate the vastness of Your Kingdom. We seek to grasp infinity and eternity, but the blinders of being human restrict our vision and we are left in awe simply to wonder. All: We are one people, on one planet, in one universe, in the infinite Kingdom of You. One: Nurturing God, the blessings of this home, this Earth, are overwhelming. Nature satisfies hunger both for food and for beauty. Gratitude abounds and we thank You. All: Our home is here, on this side of the spirit journey. Nature is Your reflection and our teacher. One: Gracious God, you grant us moments of sheer joy, in times shared with loved ones and strangers, eyes and hearts locking in the gift of connection. All: We look to revel in time held still, to hold precious moments in suspension - in this hour, in this life, in this You. Amen. Invitation to Confession Song: Listen, God Is Calling, MV 97 Listen God is calling, through the Word inviting, offering forgiveness, comfort, and joy. Prayer of Confession Words of Assurance Song: Behold, I Make All Things New, MV 115 Behold, behold, I make all things new, beginning with you and starting from today. Like the starry night sky God is over our head. Like the sun on the horizon God is ever before. Like the river runs to ocean, our home is in God evermore. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Children’s Prayer: God, be in my eyes and in my looking. God, be in my ears and in my listening. God, be in my mouth and in my speaking. God, be in my heart and in my understanding. Amen. God Calls and We Respond to the Word Psalm 65, VU 782 with Response: Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion. Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion; to you shall vows be performed. You give heed to prayer; to you all mortals shall come. The burden of our sins is too great for us, but you will purge them away. R Blessed are the people you choose And bring to dwell in your courts. We shall be filled with the blessings of your house, your holy temple. With awesome deeds you answer our prayers for deliverance, O God our saviour – you that are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the far-off seas. By your strength you make fast the mountains, and gird yourself round with power. You still the raging of the seas, and the roaring of the waves, the tumult of the peoples. Those who dwell at earth’s farthest bounds are awed by your wonders; the gateways of both morning and evening shout for joy. R You visit the earth and water it, you make it very fruitful. The waters of heaven brim over their banks, providing us with grain, for so you have prepared the land, drenching its furrows, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. You crown the year with goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty. The pastures of the wilderness abound with grass, and the hills are girded with joy. The fields are clothed with sheep; the valleys are decked with wheat, so that they shout and sing for joy. R John 20: 19-20, 24-29 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Reflection: The Grace of Wonder ~ Cheryl Stenson Hymn: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, VU 333 Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. Come, almighty to deliver; let us all thy grace receive; suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee, changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise. Invitation to the Offering Music Doxology: Grant Us, God, the Grace, VU 540 Grant us, God, the grace of giving, with a spirit large and free, that ourselves and all our living we may offer faithfully. We Pray Prayers of the People Song: God, Enfold Us God, enfold us in your heart, and keep us safe, keep us whole, keep us in the palm of your hand. Poem: There’s a Splendour upon the World by Stephen Campbell There’s a splendour upon the world apparent in the saddest sound, in the golden gilded dawn sun, in precious seconds so gentle they barely exist, in the life that strides through the purple universe. You must forgive me For being impatient When you are less than ecstatic! Closing Hymn: The Wonder of It All There's the wonder of sunset at evening, The wonder as sunrise I see; But the wonder of wonders that thrills my soul Is the wonder that God loves me. Refrain: O, the wonder of it all! The wonder of it all! Just to think that God loves me. O, the wonder of it all! The wonder of it all! Just to think that God loves me. There's the wonder of springtime and harvest, The sky, the stars, and the sun; But the wonder of wonders that thrills my soul Is a wonder that's just begun. Refrain Commissioning: One: May we go beyond words to find the message. All: And the pennies drop from head to heart. One: May we be open to new awareness All: That permeates our life of faith. One: May we breathe in the great news of eternal life and love All: And graciously share that joy. Benediction Song: I am Walking Path of Peace, MV 221 I am walking a path of peace; (3x) lead me home, lead me home. I am walking a path of hope; (3x) lead me home, lead me home. Postlude
