2nd Sunday of Lent

We Gather Together

Musical Prelude

Promise of Divine Welcome

Centering Song: Here in this Place

Here, in this place, the breath of God,

my soul finds repose.

Holy space, the heartbeat of God,

my soul finds its home.

Call to Worship:

One: God desires to gather us; her wings spread out before us

All: She gathers us together; her presence, all around us

One: To nurture is her nature. For our safety, she reaches

All: To mother is her gift. For our good, she moves

One: Sheltering over us, deep in her underwing

All: She is our fortress. She is our strength.

One: Because of us, she is wounded;

All: By her wounds we are saved.

One: Until all fear is gone, until the work is finished

All: In her, we find our justice, in her, we find our peace

Lighting of the Christ Candle

Living into the Light of Reconciliation

Opening Hymn: As the Sun with Longer Journey, VU 111

As the sun with longer journey melts the winter’s snow and ice,

with its slowly growing radiance warms the seed beneath the earth,

may the sun of Christ’s uprising gently bring our hearts to life.

Through the days of waiting, watching in the desert of our sin,

searching on the far horizon for a sign of cloud or wind,

we await the healing waters of our Saviour’s victory.

Praise be given to the Maker of the seasons’ yearly round:

to the Speaker through the Spoken in their living Breath of love

as the ever turning seasons roll to their eternal rest.

Opening Prayer

Invitation to Confession

Song: Listen, God Is Calling, MV 97

Listen God is calling, through the Word inviting,

offering forgiveness, comfort, and joy.

Prayer of Confession

One: O Wounded Healer, Mighty and Merciful,

Nothing we say can undo the damage we have done.

All: As you wept over Jerusalem, we now weep over our world.

One: You see what we have done with the gifts you have freely given us.

You sought to gather us, but we were not willing.

All: Your prophets spoke, but we did not have ears to hear.

One: Now their blood is on our hands.

We have stoned those you have sent.

All: Now, in our desperation, we pray.

Our lives are in chaos, but we long for your joy.

One: Beyond our rationalized violence, we yearn for a peace that makes no sense.

All: Forgive us, God of mercy and grace. Come again to us, we pray.

One: Then we will surely say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Words of Assurance

Song: Know That God Is Good, MV 104

Know that God is good, know that God is good,

know that God is good, God is good, God is good.

Mungu ni mwema, Mungu ni mwema,

Mungu ni mwema, ni mwema, ni mwema.

Children’s Hymn: Yahweh Be Praised, MV 51

Yahweh be praised in the heavens.

Yahweh be praised in the streets.

Yahweh be praised with our singing

When in worship we meet.

Yahweh be praised (8X)

Repeat verse and refrain

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

Children’s Prayer:

God, be in my eyes and in my looking.

God, be in my ears and in my listening.

God, be in my mouth and in my speaking.

God, be in my heart and in my understanding. Amen.

God Calls and We Respond to the Word

Where I Sleep by Emeli Sandé

performed by Isabel Matwawana and Jason Fowler

There's nowhere that I wouldn't follow,

There's nothing that I won't do for your kiss,

I love you like there's no tomorrow

Cause nothing ever felt like this.

There's nothing I won't steal or borrow,

I'll travel on a boat or aeroplane,

I'll explore a world of sorrow,

Cause when I find you I know, I know I'm gonna be okay.

See the times are changing and I'm sure of nothing that I know –

Except this is us, and this is love, and this is where I'm home.

In a world that's breaking, where nothing is for keeps,

Oh this is us, this is love and this is where I sleep.

I'm from a generation undecided,

I'm restless and I can' help changing lanes,

But in all the noise and the excitement,

Your love is all that will remain.

I've said all of my goodbyes to ego,

I gambled all I got, there's no plan B.

It's the first time that I've learnt to let go;

It's the only place I feel, only place I feel like me.

See the times are changing…

Psalm 27

God is my light and my salvation, whom then shall I fear?

God is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?

When the wicked close in to devour me,

it is they, my enemies and my foes, who stumble and fall.

If an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not be afraid;

if war should arise against me, even then I will not be dismayed.

One thing I have asked of God, for which I long:

that I may dwell in God’s house all the days of my life,

to gaze on your beauty, O God, and to seek you in your temple.

For in the time of trouble you will give me shelter;

you will hide me under the cover of your tent, you will set me high upon a rock.

And now you have raised my head above my enemies round about me.

Therefore I will offer in your dwelling a sacrifice with great gladness.

Hear my voice, O God, when I call; have mercy and answer me.

Your face, O God, I seek. Do not hide your face from me;

do not reject your servant in anger, you who have been my helper.

Do not cast me off, or forsake me, O God my saviour.

Though my father and mother forsake me, my God will take me up.

Teach me your way, O God,

lead me on a level path, safe from those who lie in wait for me.

Do not give me up to the will of my enemies,

for liars and false witnesses arise against me.

I believe that I shall see God’s goodness in the land of the living.

Wait for God; be strong, and take courage; yes, wait for God!

Psalm response: How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place

How lovely is thy dwelling place,

where my soul finds its home. (sung twice)

Luke 13:31-35

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, ‘Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.’ He said to them, ‘Go and tell that fox for me, “Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed away from Jerusalem.”

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Sermon: Where We Belong

Hymn: My Soul Is Thirsting for You, MV 109

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, thirsting for you, my God.

My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, thirsting for you, my God.

thirsting for you, my God.

O God you are my God, and I will always praise you.

In the shadow of your wings I cling to you and you hold me high. Refrain

Through the day you walk with me, all the night your love surrounds me.

To the glory of your name I lift my hands, I sing your praise. Refrain

I will never be afraid, for I will not be abandoned.

Even when the road grows long and weary your love will rescue me. Refrain

Doxology: Grant Us, God, the Grace, VU 540

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,

with a spirit large and free,

that ourselves and all our living

we may offer faithfully.

We Pray

Prayers of the People

Song: God, Enfold Us

God, enfold us in your heart,

and keep us safe, keep us whole,

keep us in the palm of your hand.

Poem: How Shall the Mighty River by Antoinette Adam

How shall the mighty river

reach the tiny seed?

See it rise silently

to the sun's yearning,

sail from a winter's cloud

flake after silent flake

piling up layer upon layer

until the thaw of spring

to meet the seedling's need.

Make tender, Lord, my heart:

release through gentleness

Thine own tremendous power

hid in the snowflakes art.

Closing Hymn: How Firm a Foundation, VU 660

How firm a foundation, you servants of God,

is laid for your faith in God’s excellent word!

What more can be said than to you has been said,

to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

‘Fear not, I am with you; O be not dismayed!

For I am your God and will still give you aid;

I’ll strengthen and help you, and cause you to stand,

upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand.

‘When through the deep waters I call you to go,

the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;

for I will be with you, your troubles to bless,

and sanctify to you your deepest distress.

‘The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose

I will not - I will not desert to his foes;

that soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake,

I’ll never - no, never - no, never forsake!’

One: Now, may the grace of God go with us.

All: May God’s face shine upon us.

One: May we carry God’s peace into the world,

offering the wholeness and healing we have received.

All: May we never cease to love and endure until the work is finished.

Song: I am Walking Path of Peace, MV 221

I am walking a path of peace; (3x)

lead me home, lead me home.

I am walking a path of hope; (3x)

lead me home, lead me home.
