Promise of Divine Welcome

Centering Song: Here in this Place

Here, in this place, the breath of God,

my soul finds repose.

Holy space, the heartbeat of God,

my soul finds its home.

Call to Worship:

One: We may be entering this season arid, dry from pain and injustices.

All: And yet, God is still hydrating our spirits.

One: We may be wandering, feeling as if we have no direction.

All: And yet, God is guiding us in the wilderness.

One: We may be fearful, wondering what comes next.

All: And yet, God is surrounding us with peace.

One: We may begin our Lenten journey spiritually arid, aimless, and anxious.

All: But the Spirit of Strength will never leave our side.

Lighting of the Christ Candle

Living into the Light of Reconciliation

Opening Hymn: Giver of the Perfect Gift, VU 116

Giver of the perfect gift, only hope of human race,

hear the prayer our hearts uplift, gathered at thy throne of grace.

Who can save us, Lord, but thou? Let thy mercy show thy power;

lo, we plead thy promise now, now, in this accepted hour.

Oh, may these our Lenten days, blest by thee, with thee be passed,

that with purer, nobler praise we may keep thy feast at last.

God the holy trinity, grant the mercy we implore;

God the one, all praise to thee through the ages evermore.

Opening Prayer

Invitation to Confession

Song: Listen, God Is Calling, MV 97

Listen God is calling, through the Word inviting,

offering forgiveness, comfort, and joy.

Prayer of Confession

One: God of exodus and wilderness, God of refuge and help,

hear us now as we make our confession to you.

All: In times of temptation, we forget what you have done for us.

One: You give us everything we need, yet we often remain unsatisfied;

All: You trust us to care for creation, yet we often abuse that trust

and spoil what we have been given.

One: You show us the way we are to follow,

All: yet we often continue on the path of self-indulgence and self-centredness.

One: Forgive us, we pray…(a time of silence)

We ask for your direction, your patience, your love;

in the name of Jesus Christ, who, in spite of his temptations,

was faithful to your saving Word.

All: Amen.

Words of Assurance

Song: Know That God Is Good, MV 104

Know that God is good, know that God is good,

know that God is good, God is good, God is good.

Mungu ni mwema, Mungu ni mwema,

Mungu ni mwema, ni mwema, ni mwema.

Children’s Hymn: Give Me Oil

Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning,

give me oil in my lamp, I pray;

give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning,

keep me burning till the break of day.

Sing hosanna! sing hosanna,

sing hosanna to the Servant king,

sing hosanna! sing hosanna,

sing hosanna, let us sing!

Give me peace in my heart, keep me loving…

Give me love in my heart, keep me serving…

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

Children’s Prayer:

God, be in my eyes and in my looking.

God, be in my ears and in my listening.

God, be in my mouth and in my speaking.

God, be in my heart and in my understanding. Amen.

God Calls and We Respond to the Word

The Bargain: Pete Townsend (The Who)

I'd gladly lose me to find you, I'd gladly give up all I had;

to find you I'd suffer anything and be glad.

I'd pay any price just to get you, I'd work all my life and I will;

to win you 'd stand naked, stoned, and stabbed.

I'd call that a bargain; the best I ever had.

I'd gladly lose me to find you, I'd gladly give up all I got;

to catch you I'm gonna run and never stop.

I'd pay any price just to win you, surrender my good life for bad;

to find you I'm gonna drown an unsung man.

I'd call that a bargain, the best I ever had.

I sit looking 'round, I look at my face in the mirror;

I know I'm worth nothing without you.

In life one and one don't make two, one and one make one

And I'm looking for that free ride to me - I'm looking for you.

I'd gladly lose me to find you, I'd gladly give up all I got;

to catch you I'm gonna run and never stop.

I'd pay any price just to win you, surrender my good life for bad;

to find you I'm gonna drown an unsung man.

I'd call that a bargain, the best I ever had.

Luke 4: 1-13

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’”

Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’”

Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written,

‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’…and…

‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’

Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

Psalm 91: On Eagle’s Wings

Cheryl Stenson, cantor, with sung response:

And I will raise you up on eagle’s wings,

bear you on the breath of dawn,

make you to shine like the sun,

and hold you in the palm of my hand.

Sermon: Giving and Giving Up

Hymn: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say, VU 626

I heard the voice of Jesus say, come unto me and rest;

lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon my breast.’

I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad;

I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘Behold, I freely give

the living water; thirsty one, stoop down, and drink, and live.’

I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream;

my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, ‘I am this dark world’s light;

look unto me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright.’

I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun;

and in that light of life I’ll walk till travelling days are done.

Offering

Doxology: Grant Us, God, the Grace, VU 540

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,

with a spirit large and free,

that ourselves and all our living

we may offer faithfully.

We Pray

Prayers of the People, with Response:

We passionately pray,

…God, renew the face of the earth.

Song: God, Enfold Us

God, enfold us in your heart,

and keep us safe, keep us whole,

keep us in the palm of your hand.

Poem: The Desert Waits by Ruth Burgess

The desert waits,

ready for those who come,

who come obedient to the Spirit's leading;

or who are driven,

because they will not come any other way.

The desert always waits,

ready to let us know who we are –

the place of self-discovery.

And whilst we fear, and rightly,

the loneliness and emptiness and harshness,

we forget the angels

whom we cannot see for our blindness,

but who come when God decides

that we need their help;

when we are ready

for what they can give us.

Closing Hymn: God of Grace and God of Glory, VU 686

God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your power;

now fulfil your church’s story; bring its bud to glorious flower.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour.

Lo, the hosts of evil round us scorn your Christ, assail your ways;

fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days.

Cure your children’s warring madness, bend our pride to your control;

shame our wanton selfish gladness, rich in goods and poor in soul.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Set our feet on lofty places, gird our lives that they may be

armoured with all Christlike graces, pledged to set all captives free.

Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, that we fail not them nor thee.

Commissioning:

One: God, you are in the desert places

All: as you are in the green and growing land.

One: Help us to look for you when life is barren and our spirits ache.

All: Help us to walk with you in the wilderness,

and to be changed in spending time with you.

Benediction

Song: I am Walking Path of Peace, MV 221

I am walking a path of peace; (3x)

lead me home, lead me home.

I am walking a path of hope; (3x)

lead me home, lead me home.
