Victory comes, glory appears.

All: We gather today to shout Alleluia!

Christ is risen; he is risen indeed.

One: We shall live, witness, and recount the deeds

Of the God whose love endures forever.

All: We gather today to shout Alleluia!

Lighting of the Christ Candle

Living into the Light of Reconciliation

Opening Hymn: Jesus Christ is Risen Today, VU 155

Jesus Christ is risen today, hallelujah,

our triumphant holy day, hallelujah,

who did once, upon the cross, hallelujah,

suffer to redeem our loss, hallelujah!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, hallelujah,

unto Christ, our heavenly King, hallelujah,

who endured the cross and grace, hallelujah,

sinners to redeem and save, hallelujah!

But the pains which he endured, hallelujah,

our salvation have procured, hallelujah,

now above the sky he’s King, hallelujah,

where the angels ever sing, hallelujah!

Sing we to our God above, hallelujah,

praise eternal as God’s love, hallelujah,

praise our God, ye heavenly host, hallelujah,

praise the Son and Holy Ghost, hallelujah!

Opening Prayer

Invitation to Confession

Song: Listen, God Is Calling, MV 97

Listen God is calling, through the Word inviting,

offering forgiveness, comfort, and joy.

Prayer of Confession

One: God of resurrection power, break through the locked doors

of our certainty to encourage our wonderings and our questions.

All: Break through the walls of our fears of others,

that we might make room for all at your table.

One: Break through our doubt and confusion,

All: that we might come to know your presence more

fully in our lives and in our world.

One: When we seek to judge ourselves and others

for disbelief and questions,

All: open the locked doors of our hearts.

One: Give us the patience of the risen Christ, in whose name we pray.

All: Amen.

Words of Assurance

Song: Know That God Is Good, MV 104

Know that God is good, know that God is good,

know that God is good, God is good, God is good.

Mungu ni mwema, Mungu ni mwema,

Mungu ni mwema, ni mwema, ni mwema.

Choral Anthem

Children’s Hymn: This Is the Day, VU 412

This is the day, this is the day that our God has made,

that our God has made;

we will rejoice, we will rejoice, and be glad in it, and be glad in it.

This is the day that our God has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.

This is the day, this is the day that our God has made.

Open to us, open to us, your gates, O God, your gates, O God;

we will go in, we will go in, to your holy place, to your holy place.

Open to us your gates, O God, we will go in to your holy place.

Open to us, open to us your gates, O God.

You are our God, you are our God, we will praise your name,

we will praise your name;

we will give thanks, we will give thanks for your faithfulness,

for your faithfulness.

You are our God, we will praise your name, we will give thanks

for your faithfulness.

You are our God, you are our God, we will praise your name.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

Children’s Prayer:

God, be in my eyes and in my looking.

God, be in my ears and in my listening.

God, be in my mouth and in my speaking.

God, be in my heart and in my understanding. Amen.

God Calls and We Respond to the Word

Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24, with sung response

Refrain:

Hal-le-lu-jah! hal-le-lu-jah!

Let Israel now say:

‘God’s love endures for ever.’

Let the house of Aaron say:

‘God’s love endures for ever.’

Let those who fear God say:

‘God’s love endures for ever.’ R

God is my strength and my song; God has become my salvation.

There are shouts of joy and deliverance in the tents of the righteous.

The right hand of God does mighty things; the right hand of God raises up.

The right hand of God does mighty things.

I shall not die, but live; and I shall proclaim what God has done.

God indeed punished me, but did not give me over to death. R

Open to me the gates of the temple, that I may enter and give thanks to God.

This is the gate of God; through it the righteous shall enter.

I thank you for you have answered me; you have become my salvation.

The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

This is God’s doing, marvellous in our eyes.

This is the day that God has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! R

Luke 24:1-12

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ Then they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

Sermon: “Death is not Defeat” – Cynthia O’Connell

Hymn: Christ Is Alive, VU 158

Christ is alive! Let Christians sing.

The cross stands empty to the sky.

Let streets and homes with praises ring.

Love, drowned in death, shall never die.

In every insult, rift, and war,

where colour, scorn, or wealth divide,

Christ suffers still, yet loves the more,

and lives, where even hope has died.

Women and men, in age and youth,

can feel the Spirit, hear the call,

and find the way, the life, the truth,

revealed in Jesus, freed for all.

Christ is alive, and comes to bring

good news to this and every age,

till earth and sky and ocean ring

with joy, with justice, love and praise.

Invitation to Communion

Communion Hymn: Eat This Bread and Never Hunger, VU 471

Refrain:

Eat this bread and never hunger,

drink this cup and never thirst;

Christ invites us to the table

where the last become the first.

Asking for a cup of water,

Jesus touched forbidden ground;

and the woman, with a question,

told the world what she had found. R

Walking down a desert highway,

Jesus healed a man born blind;

soon the man became a witness

to the truth we seek and find. R

Weeping for his friend at graveside,

Jesus felt the pain of death;

yet he knew God’s power to waken:

living water, living breath. R

One: Christ is risen!

All: He is risen indeed!

One: Lift up your hearts.

All: We lift them up to God.

One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Hallelujah, thanks and praise, ever-living God,

worker of wonders, maker of miracles…

… we join in the song of a new day,

to sing your praise:

Song: Sanctus and Benedictus, VU 932

Holy, holy, holy are you, God of power and might;

heaven and earth are filled with your glory.

Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the one who comes in your name.

Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest!

Remembering Jesus at the Table

One: Holy God, source of life and goodness…

… Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All: On Good Friday Jesus died.

On Easter he rose again.

Today he lives forever.

One: Recalling his death, proclaiming his resurrection…

… God most holy, now and forever

All: Amen.

All: for the wine we have tasted,

One: for the life we have received,

All: we thank you God.

One: Grant that what we have done

and have been given here,

All: may so put its mark on us,

that it may remain always in our hearts.

One: Grant that we may grow

in Christian love and understanding,

All: and that ours may be lives of faithful action,

in Christ’s name. Amen.

We Pray

Prayers of the People

Song: O Give Thanks to God for Steadfast Love

O give thanks to God for steadfast love;

God's love endures forever.

O give thanks to God, O give thanks to God,

for God's love endures forever.

Poem: It Is Ours To Praiseby Aleynu L’shabey’ah

It is ours to praise

the beauty of the world,

even as we discern

the torn world.

For nothing is whole

that is not first rent,

and out of the torn

we make whole again.

May we live with promise

in creation’s lap,

redemption budding

in our hands.

Closing Hymn: Good Christians All, Rejoice and Sing, VU 169

Good Christians all, rejoice and sing!

Now is the triumph of our King!

To all the world glad news we bring: Hallelujah!

The Lord of life is risen today!

Bring flowers of song, bedeck the way;

let every tongue rejoice and say: Hallelujah!

Praise we in songs of victory

that love, that life which cannot die,

and sing with hearts uplifted high: Hallelujah!

Your name we bless, O risen Lord,

and sing today with one accord

the life laid down, the life restored: Hallelujah!

Commissioning:

One: Christ is risen!

All: Stones of fear are rolled away.

One: Christ is risen!

All: Walls of prejudice are broken down.

One: Christ is risen!

All: Doubts are affirmed; questions are allowed.

One: Christ is risen!

All: Those who were pushed aside are welcomed in.

One: Christ is risen!

All: Life will never be the same again.
